Prayer of Humility

I found this prayer in the book, St. Benedict and St. Therese: The Little Rule and The Little Way, by Dwight Longenecker.

I share it because I have been called to "swallow my pride" a couple of times this week. I find when I begin to take my gifts seriously and think of myself as GRAND, rather that good, I am brought to my knees first in humility. Then, I am called to gratitude to my Lord for reminding me that my success is a gift given not something I MADE.

So I offer you this simple prayer:

"I asked for strength that I might achieve,
I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for power that I might have the praise of men,
I was given weakness that I might feel my need for God."

  1. I often pray the prayer of Humility. I like this one as well. I am printing it out and using it to change things a bit. The world needs more humble people. Thank you for posting.
    God Bless!

  2. Cathy, I so appreciate your candor and this post. How the Lord loves you. Forgive the imagery, but it would seem that like some, He has you on a short leash in this area. It is a good thing, I think! I pray all is well with you. We are experiencing a dry season and concerns about fire mount. Fortunately, there is a prediction of rain late this afternoon into the middle of the night. Oh I do hope they're right!! Bless you!! Laure K.

  4. OH, I am the same way. I pray for humility often and then forget. He always answers that prayer for me. I remember that I prayed for it when I get the dose of humility though ;)

    I loved this prayer!

    Thanks!

  5. I suppose humility's enemy is probably inflated pride - and we're well rid of that!
All it takes is the tiniest of pinpricks to burst that big balloon and it's only when it is burst we realise it was blocking our view and our progress.
You write with humility, Cathy, and that inspires others to not only think about what you say but to follow your example.
