Roses In Bloom

 When we were in Baton Rouge a couple of weeks ago, we went to the Botanic Garden at Independence Park.    It was cold and not much was in bloom.  There were a few iris budding but not many in bloom.  And then we came upon the Rose Garden.  Bushes were in bloom everywhere.  Just being in the midst of this color and fragrance of the roses diminished the chill.

My dad loved roses and took a great deal of pride in his garden.  I guess that is where I learned to love them, though I do not claim to be an expert in their growth and care.  There were so many varieties in the garden that day that I could not possibly know which was which.  All I know is I really enjoyed my walk through them that day.

And so I ascribe to William Shakespeare's quote, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet."  Is it enough to appreciate a rose and not know if it is hybrid or English rose?  I hope so.

~~~^j^~~~
Thanks be to God!
  1. Hi Cathy,
    Believe it or not, I have a Pinterest board titled "A Rose By Any Other Name..." :) I love roses, too, although we just have the one rose bush at the moment. We covered it as best we could tonight because temps here are supposed to dip into the 20's. :( Your mosaic is lovely! Do you live in Baton Rouge?
    Thanks so much for your visits this week, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
    Hugs,
    Denise
  2. I am sure one does not need to know the name of the rose to come under it's spell. A gift for the soul for sure. My roses growth is looking good but no bloom yet.
  6. Such wonderful roses and photos! Thank you for sharing!
    I think one can definitely enjoy scents and flowers also without knowing their name. Sometimes - I think - knowing too much can even diminish the pleasure.
    Have a blessed new week!
  7. The beauty of the roses must have warmed up your heart to forget the chill air. I’m more interested in colors, textures, and fragrance than the name of the rose. Not to change the subject but Umberto Eco, the author of “The Name of the Rose” passed away recently. By association I suddenly remembered it. Have happy springtime ahead.
  8. Hi Cathy,
    While I love roses, our yard has too much shade to be able to grow them. So I content myself with visiting gardens nearby!
    Lovely photo.
  10. I would much rather appreciate roses grown by someone else as they can be pretty finicky in my garden, especially the gorgeous David Austins.
