A Field of Flowers

Early morning walks allow me to see some wonderful sights.  The only thing is I often have no idea what the names of the "beauties" are.  Maybe some of my friends can help me with the name of this "beauty."

Isn't she gorgeous?

Autumn at The Woods

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, IN

 The glory in gold
From the Creator's palate
Brightens up our day

~~~~~~~
Fall at The Woods is glorious.  The trees and the campus are just so beautiful and inspiring.  For 177 years the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mahy-of-the-Woods have tended and cared for these treasures.  The environment and the care of God's creation has always been important to the sisters.
Football Fans
Odd football season
Different kind of excitement
But we're all still fans
~~~~~~

I feel I have to explain this haiku.  I've lived in Indiana now for 40 years, but every fall football season has brought me to a realization that I have  a loyalty to my home state of Colorado and those Broncos.  It keeps me rooted in the Rockies and I can again get a "rocky mountain high!"

LST 325, Evansville, Indiana

Two weeks ago family got together for a day out.  I have a grandson who is a entering sixth grade this year and is a serious WWII student.  For us all it was a wonderful time together and to remember those who have sacrificed so much for our nation.
USS LST-325 is a decommissioned tank landing ship of the US Navy.  It's now docked in Evansville, Indiana.  It was launched on October 27, 1942 at Philadelphoa, Pennsylvania and commissioned in February 1943.  The ship opereated in the North Africa area and participated in the invasions of Gela, Sicily and Salerno, Italy.  It also participated in the Normandy Landings at Omaha Beach.  She carried 59 vehicles, 30 officers, and a totals of 396 enlisted men on that first trip.

Artillery
Ship's Bridge
 Ships off ramp, restored M16 MGMC personnel carrier, the tank deck

After the war the LST was placed in service with the Military Sea Transportation Service in 1951.  From 1964 to 1999 LST-325was in Greece as part of the grant-in-aid pogram She served in the Hellenic Navy and RHS Syros.  LST is on of the last in operation in the US.

She is now based in Evansville, Indiana.

~~~~~~~
During WWII the Evansville, Indiana riverfront was transformed into a 45-acre shipyard to produce LST's.  At it peak the Evansville Shipyard emplayed a workforce of of over 19,000 and completed two of these massive ships per week, becomeing the largest inland producer of LST's in the US.  Although the evansville Shipyard was originally contracted to build 24 ships, the city would evenutally produce 167 LST's and 35 other vessels.  (Wikipedia)
~~~~~~~

It was good to learn about the role this area played in the winning of WWII.   But the best part of the day was just being with family!!  For that I am truly grateful.

Chatannooga on the Tennesee River

A couple of years ago we spent some time with a friend in the city of Chattanooga, Tennesee.  I was reminded of the day we spent there when we stopped by to see her again a couple of weeks ago on our way home from visiting our son and family in Geogia.  Acturally, being in Chattanooga can be a challenge as it is a city that sits on the borders of 3 state, Tennesee, Georgia and Alabama.  Just when you think  you are in one you are in another.  That's the way the highway system works.
View of Chattanooga across the Tennesee River

Walnut Street Bridge

The Walnut Street Bridge was built in 1890 and was the first to connect downtown Chattanooga to North Chattanooga.  The Brige is historicallry significant as an extremely long and examply of its type.  According to the Historic American Engineering Record:  "the Bridge was apparently the first non-military highway bridge across the Tennesee River. [Wikipedia]

And so it is that I have have grand memories of a time well spent in this beautiful city.  It is to our friend, Chica, that I am grateful for that delightful day!

White Violet Center and Equine Studies

I  have a warm spot in my heart for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.  I graduated from The Woods in 1994 with a degree in gerontology.  (As my husband said at the time, "You'll be in the forefront of your field."--I was 48 at the time.)  That being said I'd like to share with you some of the wonders of the Woods.
~~~~~
One of them is the Sisters of Providence White Violet Center for Eco-Justice.  It's a non-profit education center focusing on oranic agriculture, spiritual ecology and social advocacy.  It was founded in 1996 abay Sister of Providence Ann Sullivan.
The White Violet Farm Alpacas herd was started with six donated alpacas in 1998.  All the fiber from theherd is processed and utilized.  Staff members and volunteers spin, knit and weave handmade products and the center offers fiber workshops to teach these skills.
The Mari Hulman George School of Equine Studies
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is the only college in Indiana to offer a degree in equine studies. The Mari Hulman George School of Equine Studies offers a well-rounded  education in equine study and business management.  It's great to walk the campus and see these beautiful horses grazing, running and playing.
Oh, but it's just wonderful to walk the grounds of The Woods anytime!
Newan University Church
I was finally working on organizing my photos and formulating the memory book from our trip to Ireland  when I revisited this moment in the tour of Dublin.  It wasn't scheduled but the tour guide stopped so we could visit this church and neighborhood.
I had learned about Saint John Henry Newman and his life through Bishop Robert Barron's Word On Fire series Pivotal Players.  It was also exciting to be where he had preached and instructed.   He had only just recently be canonized on October 13, 2019 and we were there on November 9, 2019.
Saint John Henry Newman was born in London, England.  He was an influetial churchman and man of letters of the 19th caentury, who lead the Oxford movement in the Church of England and later became a cardinal deacon of the Roman Catholic Church.
 This is the street where he lived.
The blue door was the entrance to his home.
also know as Newman University Church
Ramblings
I love walking in the early morning.  It is generally quiet and it's much cooler.  I'm get impatient for it to cool off in the evening for a walk so I just walk in the morning.
Last week one of my early morning walks was foggy and just the right temperature for an energizing walk.  It was so foggy you couldn't see the opposite bank of the Ohio.
This morning was different.  The sun was trying to rise through the clouds and it was gloriously cool.  The humidity was low for this time of the year and I was in heaven.
The sun's trying to peek through the clouds.
The flora was flaunting its beauty!
And even on the best of days there are those who just cannot help but defy ther rules.  Right now it has just begun to rain.  It looks like my heavenly walk ended just in time.
Empty Nest
From the empty nest
Three cardinal eggs were laid
Two flew away
~~~~~~~

Mom and Dad cardinal built this fragile nest in a rose bush next to the house.  We saw them flying in and out of the bush tending to the wee ones.  There were three fledglings in the nest but only two flew away.  One morning we saw on had landed on the patio in the sun.  Ron picked  him up and put him back in the nest.  Mom came and teneded to him.  He was found again under the patio table.  Again he was returned to the nest chirping away.  Finally, that evening we went outside to sit in the cool air, only to find the wee on had passed.  He was lying under the tree in the shade.  Such a sad ending to a story of hope.  Hope we must all have that hadn't we.  I do HOPE so.

Memories of Times Gone-by

What a family is all about is apparent when we visit family in the foothills of Colorado.  You can sit on the patio and be visited by the most beautiful creatures.  They come and sit and share the space with you.

The fawns came to say hello and mother spends time investigating the land.  "His Royal Highnesss"
sits and pervays the domain.  It's so wonderful to see nature at its best!!

Short Outings

This morning my walk down to the river greeted me with a surprise.  I don't often get to see barges moving coal up river on the Ohio as often as I used to.  It's a glorious day here and a grand day to be out and about!

I was going through some old photos this morning and came upon thee of our day trip to Spring Mill State Park.  It's a beautiful place to visit with all the foliage and pioneer village.

Log Cabin
Foot Bridge and Grist Mill

The photos on the right of the collage are of the working grist mill.  The corn meal they grind makes the best corn bread!!!  I'm thinking it's time I returned to Spring Mill State Park.
